Prepare Yourself: Predictions About The 2018 Social Media Trends Are Here

Socinova | 10 NOV 2017

There have been a few major trends in the social media industry this year. Facebook attracted Snapchat users to Instagram; the US President communicated official announcements in 160 characters on Twitter, while Apple announced strategies that will change the way we interact with our digital devices.

With such advancements in social media in the past few months, we all are anticipating what's next in 2018. It seems like the next year will be flooded with digital innovations as many technologies are likely to go mainstream, which will change the social norms.

Here are the top 6 trends that are probably going to take social media by the storm in 2018.

1. The rise of augmented reality.

As cool as this sounds, augmented reality in simple language is a technology that gives a live, i.e. direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are extracted by real-world sensory inputs like sound, video, GPS, etc. Though not so advanced, some of the best examples of this are Snapchat filters or the game Pokemon Go. Recently, Apple announced that iPhone 8 and iPhone X have incorporated a new chip that will allow users some extraordinary augmented reality experiences.

While this will initially result in advanced gaming and entertainment experience, it is likely to have an impact on the social media platforms and video calling apps with improved functionality.

2. Instagram stories will get increasingly popular.

There are over 200 million people who actively post stories on Instagram each month which is over 50 million more than Snapchat users. Knowing that Instagram stories are just a year old, it is expected that almost half of the Instagram users will use the Stories feature by the end of 2018.

This would mean that brands who are interested in growing digitally and globally, will need to switch to Instagram Stories while mastering techniques that will make their stories stand out.

3. Marketing on social media will overpower traditional marketing strategies.

A majority of brands now struggle to tap the youth with traditional forms of advertisements. Today, most of the marketers believe in digital and moreover, social media marketing strategies.

Social media marketing will become so powerful in 2018 that it'll start supplementing the traditional marketing campaigns for optimum results.

4. Brands will increase participation on messaging platforms.

Today, more than 2.5 billion people globally use messaging platforms. Most brands still focus primarily on connecting with audiences through social networks. However, in 2018, we are likely to see brands investing more resources in connecting with their audiences through messaging platforms. This will increase brand loyalty while making the marketing communication a personal experience. Voice assistants, chatbots, and other forms of artificial intelligence will allow brands to offer personalised interaction (shopping or communication) through platforms like Messenger and WhatsApp.

5. Live streaming will expand.

Live streaming is increasing popularity day by day and will be strong in 2018 also. From big brands to small industries, live streaming is one of the trends businesses are going to follow to grow their reach and engagement.

 6. Facebook’s new feature Facebook Spaces might go mainstream.

Apart from live video streaming, Facebook has been working on a project called ‘Spaces'. This is designed to enable friends to connect with each other through virtual reality! Facebook owns Oculus, a VR software, and hardware company. So it is likely for this social media giant to develop a platform that will make use of this technology, making advancements in the virtual reality world.

2018 is going to bring some massive advancement in the social media world. Be prepared for the new year!
