Last month, Instagram introduced Instagram Live – a live video streaming feature not dissimilar to Facebook Live. If you’re looking to take a look at this new feature, read on to learn more about how to get started.
What is Instagram Live and why should I give it a try?
Instagram Live is a new feature that allows you to create live video streams that can be viewed in real time by your followers. It works in unison with Instagram Stories – which is for creating videos viewable for up to 24 hours.
It’s a great choice if you want to show something instantly or feel as if you’re having a real discussion and connect with your audience.
Another benefit is that your followers will get a notification when you go live, again drawing attention to you and your profile.
So if you’re ready to get started with Instagram Live, here’s what you need to know!
Going live on Instagram
To start your live broadcast on Instagram, tap on ‘Your Story’ at the top of your feed. If that option doesn’t appear (for example if you’ve scrolled down and the top bar has vanished), just tap the camera icon in the top left.
You’ll then be presented with the ‘Instagram Stories’ page, where you’ll have three different options, including:
Select ‘Live’ and you’ll be able to use the broadcasting feature and go live for your audience.
You’ll also be able to press the Settings icon to configure your preferences, including who can view your live stream.
Next, ensure your camera is facing the right way – your audience will need to be able to see you! Unless, of course, you’re focusing your stream on a product, your surroundings or another subject.
Once you’re all set up, you’re ready to go live!
What to do once you’re live
During your live stream, you’ll be able to manage your settings and interactions. You’ll be able to see:
This gives you an idea of who you’re talking to and how to interact, making for a great live session.
Ending your live stream
When you’re ready to end your broadcast, just press the ‘End’ button in the top right of your screen. Done!
You’ll then be presented with the analytics of your video, including the total number of users who viewed it. This can only be accessed once, seeing as your video will instantly disappear, so be sure to take a screenshot if you want to keep track of your analytics.
As you can see, it’s super easy to get started with Instagram Live and start providing your audience with insightful live streams.
