What Not To Post On Linkedin: Promote Your Brand While Staying Professional

Here on the Socinova blog, we’re firm believers in finding leads through LinkedIn, whether you’re looking for your next business partner or potential new clients. It’s a great place to promote yourself amongst like minded professionals who expect to see industry related content in their feeds and may even be looking for users just like you!

But there’s more to LinkedIn than simply logging in and posting what you want, whenever you want. There are certain topics you should avoid if you want to present yourself as a professional. Read on to learn more about what not to post on LinkedIn.

 

Avoid posting selfies (unless in a professional setting) or family photos.

People are used to seeing these on Facebook, but they don’t usually want to be bombarded with these in a professional setting. Keep posts like this for your own, personal social media pages and keep LinkedIn strictly business.

There are exceptions, such as if you take a photo of yourself in your office - for example, if you used it in a blog post about in-house updates!

 

Don’t post jokes and memes – unless they’re directly related to your industry, and even then only on occasion.

You wouldn’t generally visit LinkedIn to seek out humour and memes, so you should probably avoid posting them on the site too. This may be different if you find something funny that relates directly to your industry or products – just don’t make it too frequent.

 

Try not to go overboard with updates.

Posting a quick update can be a great way to let others know what you’re up to, but there’s no need for them to be excessively long. While you may enjoy a good vent in your Facebook status, LinkedIn just isn’t the place.

 

Don’t use the site to rant about or openly discuss a past partner, client or employer.

You should never talk badly about others you’ve worked with on LinkedIn. Not only is it unprofessional, it’ll also put off others from working with you.

 

Spam is not a good idea – ever.

Whenever you post content, look at it from another perspective and ask yourself ‘could this be considered spam?’

If it could be construed as spam or being nothing but an ad, don’t post it.

 

It may go without saying -  but don’t post anything inappropriate!

Any kind of inappropriate, offensive or adult content should not be posted on LinkedIn – just like you would be expected to keep such content away from the workplace.

As a general rule, don’t post anything that you wouldn’t be comfortable sharing with your boss or clients.
